Learning About VoIP
This section provides a recommended
learning programme for you to build your understanding of VoIP to the point
where you can get VoIP working for you at home. Most of the information you
will need is provided at this site. If you find there is something missing,
please email me at
mat_at_voipstuff.net.au and tell me what you would like
to see added to the site.
Learning Programme
- If you haven't already done so, read the information on the home page. This will
give you a basic overview of what is possible.
- Read up about Routers so
you understand the important role these play in VoIP
- Read the Hardware
Overview section to get an understanding of what types of VoIP
hardware are available.
- Read up about VoXaLot Web Callback. You probably wont
understand how this works until you learn a bit
more about VoIP, but it is worth knowing that it
can easily be done.
Now if you are going to use Engin, then that's all you need to do. If
you're convinced, the go buy an Engin Voicebox 1 or 2 and get going. If you
want to be able to use some of the more
advanced features,
then read on.
- Read up on dial plans
so you know how to configure your box.
- Read up about calls between
VSPs
- Read all about SIP
Broker so you understand how you can make free calls between
participating VSPs.
- Read about e164.org to
learn how to register your phone numbers so other VoIP users will get the
benefits of free SIP Broker calls to you, even if they don't realise you
have VoIP.
- Go back and read everything about VoXaLot so you can see how VoXaLot can help you get
the benefits of free SIP Broker calls (and more) when calling other
people that have VoIP registered with e164.org.
- If you have a VSP that doesn't allow inbound SIP dialling, then go
and read up on how you can set upIP Dialling.

Getting Help
If you have trouble configuring your ATA,
your router, want some advice or anything else, try searching on
Whirlpool forum to see if anyone else has had the same
problem or question. If you can't find this information by searching, then
(and only then) try asking for help by creating a new discussion thread.
You wont be popular if you ask a question that has been answered many times
before, so do put in a bit of effort and search for the answer you need
before asking for help.
